Precautions for the upcoming Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m. We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner.

During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, we must be cautious and refrain from allowing students exposure to this event. As such, CBE schools have been asked to keep students indoors during class time, over recess and lunch breaks, as well as away from windows to the outside between the hours of 11:50 a.m. – 1:50 p.m.

We would like to invite all students who go home for lunch to remain at school during the lunch break. Please send a lunch with your child.  We will be switching the indoor/outdoor times of our lunchtime to allow students to play outside before 11:50 am.  Ms. Le’s and Mr. Claussen’s classes will eat their lunch and do their learning inside the main building during so students requiring a bathroom break do not have to go outside.

During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.  For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

If you have further questions, please contact our school office.

This Week at The Hamptons School

In Kindergarten this week students talked about the four zones of regulation, and strategies that they can use to return to the green zone so that they are ready to learn.  Students focused on the letter J in English Language Arts and in Music they have been playing Egg Shaker Songs.

In Grade One, students have been learning about cooperation and teamwork through the lens of community building in Social Studies.  In Math, students have been learning about money including dominations and counting.  To demonstrate their money skills, students were able to buy items from the class store.  In writing, they have been focusing on adding details to make their writing more interesting.  Students were excited to work on balancing, jumping and rolling on the mats in gymnastics.

In Grade Two, students had a large focus on landforms and water bodies in Alberta as part of the Social Studies curriculum and as a part of their preparation for their upcoming assembly.  Students also completed both research and art as a part of their Social Studies focus.  In Math, students began to work through addition problems with re-grouping.  Much like the Grade ones, Grade twos focused on balancing, rolling and jumping in gymnastics.

In Grades Three and Four, students in Mrs. Stetz’s class wrote “stuck stories” in language arts.  In Math, students wrapped up division and started their unit on fractions.  In Science, students continued their learning about the food chain and were able to make an artistic chain and/or a food web representation of a food chain series, and used their knowledge of the food chain in a gymnasium game.  Finally, students completed their final coding challenge using Robo Garden.

School Council & Fundraising Society

On Wednesday, April 10th we will be having our next School Council and Fundraising Society meeting and we would love for you to join us!  Usually our meetings last no longer than an hour and School council members work together to support and enhance student learning. They provide a way for members of the community to consult with and offer advice to Ms. Bradbury.  We will be looking to fill a few key positions at our May 22nd AGM, so come and check out the wonderful group that supports The Hamptons School!
