This Week at The Hamptons School

In Kindergarten this week students were composing in their math journals.  They learned how to write the numeral and then drew the associated amount of things.  For example, after writing the numeral three, students would draw three cats.  In science students started to talk about movement.  Students made things from playdough and then sorted them into things that could or could not move.

In Grade One it was a big week!  Classes celebrated the 100th day of school with all things counting.  Students were able to bring in their own collections of 100 things and counted by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. Students continued to practice for their Pink Shirt Day assembly which is taking place next Wednesday, February 28th at 10:30 am.  Grade One parents are welcome to attend.  In writing, students have been reflecting on the last 100 days of school and how much they have grown!

In Grade Two students have been learning about the characteristics of sound in science.  This includes the concept of volume, pitch and duration.  In phys ed, students are loving the chance to learn how to serve and rally in badminton.  Finally, Ms. Ringheim’s class completed some geometric kindness art.

In Grades Three and Four students are continuing to explore their poetry unit.  Students in Mrs. Stetz’s class are beginning to write limericks, while in Ms. Le’s class they are writing Haikus.  Mr. Claussen is currently focusing on figurative language in poetry.   Students are continuing to explore various strategies for multiplication – ask your child about arrays! In science students are wrapping up their unit on energy while in Phys Ed students are honing their badminton skills.

Terry Fox Run Thank You

This week we received a letter of thanks from the Terry Fox Foundation.  It noted that our school community raised $1,364 for cancer research which was twice our fundraising goal!  The Foundation thanked us for making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families across Canada and beyond.  Way to go Hamptons School!
