This Week At The Hamptons School
It has been a busy and exciting week at The Hamptons School which included welcoming 78 kindergarten students from Edgemont School following the unexpected flood that happened in their school. All hands and departments in the CBE were called into action to set up each grade for success at their "new" schools. We were able to fully outfit Room 2 and Portable Room 9 and transform them into lovely and welcoming Kindergarten classrooms for Ms. Choi and Ms. Beck. Our students have been amazing citizens welcoming our new students and helping in any way possible.
In Kindergarten this week, students read the story "Sneezy the Snowman." The purpose of this activity in English Language Arts is to practice their skills on sequencing and retelling a story. Students were given pictures/story strips that they cut out and then put in order of the story. They were then asked to retell their version of the story. At the end of each day, Ms. Richardson has been reading Winter Holiday books including "Pete the Cat" and "Chicka, Chicka, Ho, Ho, Ho!" Finally in gym, students were excited to participate in the Netball residency, where they had a focus on passing and shooting. Students worked on saying their partners name before throwing the ball.
In Grade 1, students did Netball in their Phys Ed Residency. They did more indepth work on learning about numbers to 50 and using various methods of making them. They learned the short "E" sound in UFLI and did a short vowel review now that they have learned all of the short vowels. Students read the story Iggy Peck Architect, and did their first reader response. In science students are learning about properties and learning how to describe objects using descritive words. Finally, they learned how polar animals survive the ice and snow as a writing prompt.
In Grade 2, students continued to build their understanding of collecting and recording data in Math by creating surveys and representing their results in different graph forms including tally, pictograph and bar. In science, students continued to explore objects made of different materials and recorded objects in the classroom made from more than one material. They also created an object of their choice using two materials combined together to create a solid and secure structure. They are starting to learn about the properties of materials and ways to describe each object. In writing, students watched a Mystery Science video about building houses from mud and then wrote about what they learned. They also learned about using how to make contractions by joining two words and using them accurately in a complete sentence. Finally in Phys Ed, students practiced ball skills to help them play a netball game. They also learned the different positions of each player and how to follow the rules to play a game.
In Grade 3/4 students were very excited to be leaders in the school during our Instant Winter activity on Friday. Each class got to go with a different teacher and do a special piece of art. In math, students finished addition and started subtraction while in art, students created insulator snow people and snow people ornaments. They also repurposed plastic from picture frames to create stained class window art. Finally, in English Language Arts students continued their journey with figurative language to make their writing more interesting.
