This Week At the Hamptons School

We were SO excited that Mother Nature decided to end her twenty day stretch of below -20 degrees this week!  Students were elated to return to outdoor recess AND start using the classroom sets of snowshoes that were purchased at the end of last year with the optional lunch room fee!

This week in Social Studies, Kindergarten students kicked off their "Show and Tell" series, where they have the opportunity to share their unique talents with the class. In Science, students explored the concept of movement, discussing things that move and don’t move, as well as the different ways objects can move. In Math, students focused on the numbers 8 and 9, practicing how to write the numerals and represent them with drawings. They also read Bird’s New Nest and engaged in an interactive Smart Notebook activity called "Birds on a Wire," where they practiced grouping and counting birds while reinforcing positional words such as on, off, over, under, next to, and between. In Art, students were introduced to the concept of symmetry and worked with partners to decorate a matching pair of symmetrical mittens.

In Grade 1 this week, students focused on short vowel sounds (a, i, o, and u) in their UFLI lessons. In Math, they were introduced to number bonds and the part/part/whole model to strengthen their understanding of number relationships. During Inquiry, students explored our school community and learned about the meaning behind our mascot, the Husky. In Phys Ed, they had a great time practicing their snowshoeing skills!

This week in Grade 2, students explored compound words through their UFLI lessons and practiced using them in their writing. In Literacy, they studied adverbs and worked on enriching their writing by incorporating both adverbs and compound words. In Social Studies, students wrapped up their studies of the Inuit people and prepared for their upcoming assembly. They also conducted research on various animals, learning about their appearance, habitat, diet, and other interesting facts. In Math, students completed their unit on place value and reinforced their learning by playing engaging math games. Their Art lessons focused on creating beautiful northern lights artwork and sketching Arctic animals. In Gym, students enjoyed playing hockey and learning how to snowshoe, making the most of the winter season!

In Grade 3/4, students were excited to play floor hockey and go snowshoeing in Phys Ed.  In Social Studies students worked on their country research while in math they wrapped up multiplication.  In Grade 4, students specifically examined Prime and Composite Numbers, Greatest Common Factor and Multiples as well as 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication.  In Science students added to their Moon Journals and explored the North Star and its significance.  Finally, students continued their novel study "A Rover's study" and coded using the program Robo Garden.

Safety Tip of the Week

Although the weather has turned significantly warmer - please still send your child(ren) with snowpants, boots, gloves and hats.  This keeps them warm and dry during outdoor play!
