This Week At The Hamptons School

In Kindergarten, students started 2025 by learning about the letter N including its letter name, sound and formation.  As part of our well-being work, Ms. Richardson read the book The Color Monster.  This book explores different feelings.  Following the read aloud the class talked about their different feelings and what they can do if they are sad or mad.  They also asked themselves what it means to be calm and happy! Students were excited to work with our dance instructor during Phys Ed and learn many new dance moves.  Finally, students took part in a  Lunar New Year activity and were eager to learn about all the different animals associated with the lunar new year. With the help of a parent volunteer, students learned most members of the classroom community are likely born during Year of the Pig.  They also discovered that they cannot choose their animal :)

In Grade 1, students learned about New Year's Resolutions!  They discussed how to create achievable goals and what an appropriate personal goal may be.  Ask your child what their New Year's Goal is.   In UFLI, students learned the sound of R by its self (at the beginning of the word), the next lesson is to learn R-word blends including  gr, pr and br.   In Math, students representing 10s to 100. For example, they learned that 20 is two groups of 10, but less than 50.  They also took an initial look at the hundreds chart and where the tens numbers are, and that they start with a numeral and end with a 0 in the ones place.  In Science, students are learning about winter as part of their Earth Systems Unit.

In Grade 2, students started a study of place value in math, learning about ones, tens and hundreds.  They also explored making numbers using base 10 blocks on place value charts.  As part of their UFLI Literacy Lessons, students learned about "long o" and "bossy e" words such as: chose, throne, and broke. They practiced many different long O words in a variety of ways. Continuing in Language Arts, students wrote about their winter break using past tense verbs and describing words. Students are also learning about parts of speech and have started exploring what nouns are.  In Social Studies students are learning about the Inuit People and the community of Iqaluit.  They have been introduced to a broad perspective of life in the Arctic. They have learned about Inukshuks and how it is an important part of the Inuit culture. In Art, students are learning how to draw 3 D shapes and will apply this to drawing 3 D Inukshuks. They will learn shadowing techniques. In Phys Ed students were introduced to dance moves of Hip Hop, which was started in the Bronx in New York. Students enjoyed moves such as Bismarky, Bart Simpson and the Smurf.

In Grade 3/4, students started an exciting unit in Geometry with a focus on angles.  During a scavenger hunt around the school and using a protractor, Grade 3s looked for angles within triangles while Grade 4s focused on complementary and supplementary angles.  In Science students learned about Earth Systems, specifically exploring the Geosphere including the Earth's crust, mantle, outer core and inner core.  Students became poets by writing both free verse and limerick poems and to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year students planned a dragon activity.

Safety Tip of the Week

School Drop Off (between 8:15 and 8:30) can be busy.  Please give yourself plenty of time to avoid congestion and unsafe practices like stopping in front of the entrance of the staff parking lot/bus zone, doing U-Turns or having students walk through the parking lot.
