Thank You
A quick note of appreciation for reading the Principal's message each week. It is a great way to stay connected with the school and be in the know. An additional thank you for those who donated to the bottle drive for staff appreciation last week!
This Week At The Hamptons School
In Kindergarten, students have been focusing on the Mitten Story. They read a total of four different stories including two very similar versions and two spin off versions. Students then discussed the similarities and differences of each story, practiced sequencing the events in the stories and then made their own version of the story. In Music class, students are learning about a steady beat. They have learned the song "Music has a steady beat" and explored their heart beat, clock sounds, bouncing a ball and walking at a steady beat. They also sang the Gold Fish song and sang "I'm No Chicken" accompanied by egg shakers. In Art, students created cards to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year while in math they explored patterns with doubles. For example Red, Red, Blue, Red, Red, Blue.
In Grade 1, students did an art project where they worked as fashion designers to create mittens. Through the multi-disciplinary lens of art and math they used pastels to create symmetrical lines and designs. In Math students continued solidifying knowledge of 10s and 1s and Ms. Oseen has been very impressed by their work. In Science, students are continuing to learn about the season of winter and what happens to plans during this time of year. Finally in UFLI students worked on the letter L and L blends including BL and PL.
In Grade 2, students engaged in a UFLI Lesson where they focused on words ending with "ce". Continuing with Literacy, in writing they explored nouns and also read a story by an Inuit author named Michael Kusugak. After reading the story, students identified the characters, setting, problem and solution. In Social Studies, students continued their study of the Inuit culture by exploring stories and videos to build background knowledge and understanding. They also learned about inukshuks and created a 3 D art drawing while exploring Inuit artifacts such as a walrus tusk, seal skin and narwhale tusk. In Math students continued to build understanding of place value for numbers up to 1000 while in Phys Ed, they participated in a strength training circuit and played tag games.
In Grade 3/4, students were excited to continue their Science unit on Earth Systems where they explored the atmosphere and hydrosphere. In Math, students continued with Geometry, specifically looking at transformations including translations, reflections and rotations. A translation is the movement of an object up or down, left or right without flipping, turning or changing the size. A reflection is the image of an object, as seen in the mirror. Finally, a figure can be rotated about a point called the centre of rotation. In ELAL they worked on summarizing both fiction and non-fiction texts while in Phys Ed, students participated in a strength circuit.
