This Week At the Hamptons School

In Kindergarten, students learned about the letter P.  In their letter book they practiced printing the letter, drawing items that start with P and practicing the sound that P makes.   In their journals students focused on the numbers  1, 2 and 3.  Like their printing book, student practiced printing the numbers with proper formation, drawing an image linked to that number and using that number in a sentence.  Students were thrilled to have a mini dance party/movement break with Ms. Bradbury as well as continuing to add details to their Lunar New Year Cards with acrylic markers.

In Grade 1, students were estimating and comparing whole numbers in Math.  In English Language Arts, students did the letters J and W in their UFLI lessons and continued to utilize the word wall when writing. Finally, students continued their science learning exploring various aspects of living things in Winter.

In Grade 2, students are working on words that end in "GE" in English Language Arts. In interdisciplinary lessons, students continue to read more stories of the Inuit People as well as complete writing tasks about them. In Phys Ed students used polo sticks (that look like giant Q-Tip!) to play activities and games.  In Math, students are digging into work on place value by focusing on expanding and standard notation and writing three digit numbers in different forms.  Ms. Werle and Ms. Hughes did a parent council presentation where parents were able to explore Inuit artifacts and view sketched visual journals artifacts.

In Grade 3/4, students engaged in learning about the Indigenous Medicine Wheel.  They explored the four quadrants of the wheel and their different meanings.  This week the classes focused on the East quadrant that is yellow and represents new beginnings with imagery such as the sun and spring time.  Students wrapped up their geometry unit with identifying different types of triangles (grade 4) and acute, obtuse and right angles (grade 3).  Finally, students finished their Science unit on Earth Systems exploring the interconnections of the four spheres including the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and geosphere.

Presentation at School Council

This week at School Council there was a presentation regarding The Hamptons School Development Plan (SDP) and 2024-25 Budget.  Please stay tuned for a survey that will be sent via email on February 3rd where parents/guardians will have the opportunity to give feedback on the SDP and Budget.  If you would like to read our current SDP or learn more about fees please see the following links:

Family Literacy Week

Families across Calgary are invited to join the Calgary Board of Education in celebrating Family Literacy Week from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, with a focus on environmental learning through the theme “Learn to Be Green, Together.”

The CBE Literacy & Early Learning Team has prepared a variety of information and activities to help families engage in meaningful learning at home and at school. Reading together or doing learning activities at home is crucial to a child’s learning and development.

Here’s how families can participate: CBE At-Home Activities & Resources and Calgary Public Library Family Game Time.  Since 1999, schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups across Canada have taken part in Family Literacy Day which takes place every Jan. 27.

Safety Tip of the Week

Be a great neighbour!  Please remember to not obstruct parking of the homes surrounding our school when picking up and dropping off.  We want to continue our positive relationship with our neighbours!
