This Week At the Hamptons School
It was a wonderful week of learning and excitement in Kindergarten! The week began with the class reading Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The students enjoyed creating their own versions of the story, deciding what foods their caterpillars would eat, and designing patterned front covers for their books. The class also explored the Ross Burach Butterfly series, learning about the life cycle of a butterfly, migration, pollination, and nocturnal animals. The students were full of curiosity and enthusiasm as they deepened their understanding of the natural world. In Phys Ed, the Kindergarten students had a fantastic time during the tennis residency, practicing coordination and ball skills in fun and engaging ways. A very special moment this week was the class’s final observation of their classroom caterpillars and butterflies. The students carefully noted the changes and eagerly anticipated what was to come next. The highlight of the week was the BUTTERFLY RELEASE! The class gathered together to set their beautiful butterflies free. There were cheers, smiles, and a sense of wonder as the butterflies fluttered into the sky.
This week, our Grade 1 students were busy building their reading, writing, and thinking skills across many subject areas! In literacy, students continued their UFLI lessons, focusing on open and closed syllables and compound words. They practiced these skills while reading two decodable texts: "Jo’s Friend Russ" and "Mo and the Sandbox." In Phys Ed, the class enjoyed a special tennis residency, where they learned basic tennis skills and worked on coordination and ball skills. In math, students completed their unit on word problems and began exploring statistics, learning how to collect and organize data in a graph. During science, the focus was on habitats and practiced taking jot notes to record important information. They ended the week on a high note, spending time with our Grade 3 & 4 reading buddies
In Grade 2 during UFLI lessons, students worked on reading and spelling words ending in -ed and -ing, with a special focus on when to double the consonant. In writing, they reflected on the story The Mouse and the Motorcycle by writing chapter summaries and exploring the personality of Ralph the Mouse through character reflections. In science, students continued their Earth systems unit by learning about the solar system and reviewing the landforms of Alberta. In math, students wrapped up their learning on fractions and began exploring the concept of measuring time. During Phys Ed, the class practiced their tennis skills, building coordination and confidence with each rally.
In Grade 3/4, students explored the key elements of writing a biography and autobiography in Language Arts. They applied what they learned by writing their own pieces, reflecting on personal experiences or researching a person of interest. In Math, the students continued working through their measurement unit, developing skills in estimating, comparing, and calculating various measurements. In Phys Ed, students participated in a tennis residency with Coach Tony. They focused on building their rallying skills and improving both their forehand and backhand techniques. In Science, the class continued their research on Alberta animals, gathering interesting facts and deepening their understanding of local wildlife. Students also took ownership of their learning this week by designing and implementing their own opening task, fostering independence and creativity in how they start their day.
