This Week At the Hamptons School
This week in Kindergarten, students learned all about butterflies and moths! They talked about how they are different, and then we used what we learned to make beautiful symmetrical butterfly art. Students also reviewed the butterfly life cycle and cut out, colored, and sequenced the different stages—from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Everyone is so excited as they wait and watch for our real chrysalides to turn into butterflies! In our alphabet books, they focused on the letter B—B is for butterfly! Students had a fun time with their Buddies from Ms. Le’s class. They read stories together and then played outside. Finally, in Math, students read the story 10 Flashing Butterflies and used blocks to match the butterflies in the book. This helped Kindergarten students practice counting backward and learn about part-part-whole relationships.
In Grade 1, students were busy building their literacy and numeracy skills through a variety of engaging activities. In their UFLI lessons, students focused on words with the –ing ending and explored how to break words into syllables. They enjoyed working with word families through a Words Their Way sort and practiced their reading skills with the decodable passage Joe’s Friend Russ and We Love Camp. These passages supported their growing confidence as readers. A special highlight was attending an online story and art program hosted by the Calgary Public Library, where students listened to stories and participated in creative activities. In Math, students continued practicing how to solve word problems using their whiteboards, helping them strengthen their problem-solving strategies and number sense. In Science, they began researching animals and learning how to classify them into different groups based on their characteristics.
In Grade 2, students are diving into fractions—exploring parts of a whole, comparing values, and even tackling some real-life fraction scenarios. It’s been a great way to build their number sense and problem-solving skills. In science, the focus is on Earth systems and students are investigating how different systems interact and affect our planet. Curiosity is in full swing as they ask big questions about how Earth works! Their writing block has been centered around the novel Ralph S. Mouse. Students are enjoying the adventures of Ralph while working on comprehension, character analysis, and making connections through thoughtful writing activities. Creativity is blooming in art with a beautiful spring flower project while in gym, students picked up their rackets for some fast-paced badminton action by learning the rules of the game, practicing hand-eye coordination, and having lots of fun! Shout out to Ali for his help writing this message!
In Grade 3/4 one of the highlights was the Earth Rangers Assembly, where students had the unique opportunity to meet some fascinating wildlife ambassadors—including Millie the armadillo, Draco the lizard, and Floyd the ball python. Their curiosity and enthusiasm were evident as they learned about the importance of protecting animals and their habitats. That enthusiasm carried into our field trip to the Anne & Sandy Cross Conservation Area, where students explored nature firsthand and deepened their understanding of conservation in action. This outdoor experience helped connect what they’ve been learning in the classroom to the natural world around them. Back at school, students have been engaging in a variety of cross-curricular learning activities. In Science, they conducted research on animals and wrote informative plant paragraphs, combining inquiry with writing skills. In Language Arts, students focused on developing their narrative writing through “seed stories,” learning how to craft strong story hooks and develop detailed, engaging middles. Math lessons have centered on the concept of time, with students learning to read both digital and analog clocks and applying their knowledge through real-world problem-solving.
