This Week At The Hamptons School
It has been an exciting week in Kindergarten as our duckling hatching project reaches a thrilling moment—Egg #2 has begun to hatch! There’s a buzz of anticipation in the classroom as students eagerly await the arrival of a baby duckling, which we hope will make its debut today or tomorrow. The children had the chance to watch Ms. Richardson and Ms. James put the incubator into lockdown, a key step in preparing for hatching day. They also completed their final observation drawings of the "pip" (the first crack in the egg) and watched a fun and informative video about duck facts to build their background knowledge. In literacy, students explored the letters Z and X, practicing their sounds and formations through engaging activities. For gym, the beautiful weather allowed students to take their movement time outside to the playground, where they practiced climbing, balancing, and cooperative play. As part of our wellness learning, the class read The Peaceful Spot and reflected on what calmness feels like to them by creating a visual journal page.
In Grade 1, in literacy students continued building foundational skills through a vowel-consonant review in UFLI, with a focus on patterns like U_C. They also explored letter sounds and blends during their Words Their Way sort, comparing S, T, and the blend ST. As part of their reading practice, students read two UFLI decodable texts: June’s Flute and The Five-Mile Hike. In math, students worked through word problems, using pictures, numbers, and words to show their thinking. Their creativity blossomed in art as they continued their pussy willow pieces and added new observations to their plant logs, connecting science and seasonal change. They also expressed their understanding of springtime plant growth through a visual journal page. Physical Education brought energy and excitement with pickleball skills and a celebration of World Dance Day!
In Grade 2, students focused on UFLI work with words containing “oo” and the long “u” sound. During reading, students practiced identifying key words to help them answer comprehension questions while exploring an informational text about koalas. In writing, students in Ms. Hughes’s class reflected on gratitude and expanded their vocabulary by learning about antonyms and synonyms, using these to craft more interesting sentences. In Ms. Werle’s class, students read Fin’s Little Fib and discussed what it means to tell a fib. Science lessons centered around exploring light and shadows, as students traced their shadows at different times of the day and compared their length and direction. Art time has been spent preparing thoughtful creations for Mother’s Day, while in gym class, students practiced pickleball skills and joined in the fun of International Dance Day. In math, Ms. Hughes’s class began learning how to subtract with regrouping, while Ms. Werle’s class completed their work on addition with regrouping.
This week in Grade 3/4, students engaged in a range of dynamic and meaningful learning experiences across subject areas. In gym, they developed their coordination and teamwork skills while learning the fundamentals of pickleball—a fun and fast-paced game that had everyone moving! In math, students explored the concept of fractions through a creative and hands-on activity: designing their own fraction pizzas. This engaging task helped them visualize and deepen their understanding of part-whole relationships in a fun and memorable way. Students also had the opportunity to exercise their voices and practice citizenship by participating in a classroom vote. Presented with the choice of free time, an outside break, or tech time, students reflected, discussed, and voted. Room 1 demonstrated their democratic decision-making skills by selecting tech time.
Safety Tip of the Week
Today, we successfully completed our fifth fire drill of the year! It’s a great reminder to think about fire safety at home as well. Have you discussed a fire escape plan with your family? Now is the perfect time to talk about safe exit routes and what to do in case of an emergency!
