This Week At the Hamptons School
As a school we honoured Remembrance Day and Indigenous Veterans Day with a poignant and moving assembly that was planned, organized and hosted by Room 3 - Ms. Ringheim's class, and Room 7 - Ms. Le's class. On behalf of the school I want to thank the students and teachers for their hard work and dedication they poured into this assembly. I was also very impressed with all students in attendance and their respectful behaviour for such an important gathering.
In Kindergarten, students are working on blending and segmenting compound words in English Language Arts. To honour Remembrance Day, Ms. Richardson read the "Peace Book" by Todd Parr and then discussed their own ideas of peace. Students practiced listening to the Last Post, observing a moment of silence and listening to Reveille. In journals, students practiced high frequency words while in math they are continuing their pattern unit by adding doubles and triples to their cores. Ms. Richardson even has the students engaged in a pattern contest to create the longest core - so far the record is 10!
In Grade 1, students learned a new vowel sound as part of their UFLI Literacy Lessons. This week they learned the short O vowel sound like is found in the word Octopus. In writing, they continue to add interesting words, while in Math students are representing numbers in different ways. For example, the number 9 could be spelled NINE, or could be represented using five fingers & four fingers together. In gym students used scooters. Finally, students explored the meaning of the word veteran and the words piece versus peace.
In Grade 2, students finished reading their prairie novel and discussed life in the pioneer times. Students created chapter summaries focusing on the who, what, when and where in each chapter and watched Laura Ingalls Wilder video to show pioneer life and how hard it could be. In math, students worked on addition and used counting up strategies using a number line and introduced fact families. Students read a story about Peace and related it to Remembrance Day and created dove art work with a short writeup about what Peace looks like. Finally, Ms. Hughes class wrote postcards to veterans which will be delivered to the Cochrane Legion.
In Grade 3/4, students in math wrapped up number lines up to 100,000 as well as finishing their work with place value. In gym students used scooters to play games while in English Language Arts they finished their personal narratives. In science, students made a personal plan to reduce waste as stewards of the environment . Finally, in music students were either practicing for the assembly or singing partner songs.
