This Week At the Hamptons School

In Kindergarten, students have continued working with the number 10 by counting blocks with one-to-one correspondence and then building a rod.  Like last week, students were asked to compare the size of the rod to objects in classroom but this time find things that were smaller than the rod.  In ELAL students read the story "You be you" and started to make their corresponding unique fish by using stripes that practiced straight lines and stripes that showed  patterns.  This week students started their printing book with the letters S and M while in gym students played red light / green light with plasma cards.

In Grade 1, students were introduced to letter "C" and short "U" sounds in UFLI.  In math, students focused on numbers in the teens and explored "10s numbers" up to 50 (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50).  In mystery science writing, students wrote about why snow is white while in art, students created a winter wonderland picture to prepare for interviews. Finally, students were thrilled to use plasma cars in gym with musical interludes.

In Grade 2, students started a math unit on Collecting and Organizing Data. In this unit, students are learning how to create a survey question, collect data, interpret data, and then record data in a chart using tallies and pictures. In writing students are learning to add descriptive words to make their writing more interesting using both adjectives and verbs.  They are also expanding writing ideas by explaining the why or how.  For example: the bad and good of plastics in our world.  In science, students started a unit on Matter to understand what matter is.  They explored materials used to create objects in our environment by identifying objects in our classroom and what they are made from. In UFLI, students built an understanding of words ending with ing, ong, ang and ung and identified words in text using /ng/ combinations.  They practiced these new skills by playing the roll and read game.  Finally, in art students participated in a guided drawing of a winter scene using Art Hub.

In Grade 3/4, students showed off their competitive sides in Phys ed when they played both ringette and hockey using scooters and plasma cars.  In health and wellness students explored the important topic of a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset through the lens of an art challenge.  In math, students used number-lines, base ten pictures and addition vocabulary while in music students composed their own songs.  Finally, in handwriting students focused on the letter T!

It's Cold Outside!

Did you know that we play outside for recess as often as possible?  Unless the temperature/windchill drops below -20 degrees we bundle up and go outside!  It is important for students to engage in outdoor play in the fresh air so we ask that you send your student(s) dressed appropriately for our wintery weather.
