This Week At the Hamptons School

In Kindergarten, students had art-a-palooza!  Students created orange paint by mixing red and yellow paint with their hands! Students than traced pumpkins, cut them out and then made faces like jack-o-lanterns.  The class read the book Bat Jamboree and discovered what the pyramid shape is.  Today was a special day as the kindergarten class had their first visit with their Grade 3/4 Buddy class!  Ms. Le and Ms. Richardson's students created Diyas to celebrate Diwali. Finally, students added a page focused on Family for their This is Me book.

In Grade One, students finished their name art.  In English Language Arts and Literatures students continued their work with consonant - vowel - consonant words (CVC) with a focus on the short "a" and short "I" vowel sounds.  In social studies students are excited to share their family puzzle pieces.  In the gym students played Zombie Tag and Grave Stones - scary!  To honour and celebrate Diwali, students made rangolis with their grade 3 and 4 buddies!

In Grade Two, literacy had a continued focus on diagraphs including: th, sh, ph & ck.   In a cross curricular task (English Language Arts & Social Studies) students learned about the author Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder who wrote the Little House on the Prairie series.  The classes then began to read the chapter series Hard Time on the Prairies.   In math, students learned how to count on in various ways including using a number line with the next steps including graphing.  In phys ed students played various Halloween games.

In Grade Three/Four, students took part in Haunted House descriptive writing.  It was an exciting and spooky task where students first made a plan for their writing.  Teachers then introduced students to house/real estate listings so they could learn how to properly pitch their sales plan.  The students wrote persuasively to try and sell their haunted house.  In math, students were plotting numbers on a number line up to 10,000 while in gym they played various Halloween games including Zombie Tag.  Finally, in science, students continued their unit on matter learning about where garbage goes after it is thrown out.  This lesson had good connections to an upcoming fieldtrip to the Shephard Landfill.

Fall Safety Drills

We are happy to report that our three fall fire drills and one school lockdown practice (accompanied by Calgary Police) are complete.  We are very proud of our young learners for their diligence in following our safety protocols during these important practice drills.  We will have three more fire drills and one more lockdown in the new year.

School Bus Evacuation Drills

School Bus evacuation drills have begun and will be held at schools throughout the rest of the calendar year. Do not be alarmed if you notice students exiting through the back emergency exit - this is part of the drill! These important safety practices happen twice a year, with a second set scheduled between February-April.

During these drills, students will practice key steps for a smooth evacuation, including exiting through the back door and gathering at a designated muster point. Service providers will reach out with drill dates, aiming to provide at least a week’s notice, though scheduling changes may occasionally shorten this timeframe.
