This Week At The Hamptons School

In Kindergarten this week students were busy settling into the routines of school.  Students learned about "mat man" which is a way to teach students how to draw a person with all of their parts!  They also completed their first journal entry of the year and were able to select what they wanted to write/draw about.  In math, students learned the concept of "10 hands" and to count using their fingers  They continued their number journey by cutting out numbers 1 - 10 and then gluing them in order.  In music students learned the songs "Elephants have Wrinkles", Pete the Cat "Rocking in my School Shoes" and "Tootie Ta!".

In Grade One students were also re-learning and establishing routines in the classroom.  Students explored and started to label their emotions including what it means to be in the green zone.  They read several books including "Bucket Filler" and "Group Plan" as a way to learn about following rules and routines while making choices that positively effect the whole group.  Students also learned about whole body listening and what it means to be a respectful listener.  In math students began their unit on counting.

In Grade Two students settled into their routines in their new classrooms.  As a way to get to know each other students created an "about me robot" and also wrote letters to their teachers introducing themselves and what they did over the summer.  The teachers then wrote the students back.  In math students worked on sorting various buttons based on their attributes as an introduction to the patterning unit.  Finally in Phys Ed students played cooperative and tag games.

In Grade Three/Four students began learning and reading about Terry Fox in preparation for our Terry Fox Run taking place next Friday (more info on that below).  They created a paper people art project and played a guess who game using facts they learned about each other.  Many students also wore broccoli necklaces as part of a novel study called "How to be a Perfect Person in just Three Days" by Stephen Manes.  In case you are wondering, step one of being perfect is to wear a broccoli necklace.  Finally students used a survey to brainstorm on various topics as an introduction to their statistics unit.

Terry Fox Run

All parents are invited to participate in our Terry Fox Run next Friday morning.  Parents who wish to walk with their child will meet them on the playground at 9:45 AM when we dismiss from our assembly.  Please support cancer research by donating.

School Council

Our first School Council meeting of the year will take place in-person at our school on Wednesday evening, September 18.  As a parent/guardian of the Hamptons School you are automatically a member of school council.  These two important organizations work to support parental involvement in the school community and enhance student learning.  We hope to see you there!
