Reminder - Photo Day
Tuesday, October 1 is individual and class photo day at The Hamptons School.
This Week At the Hamptons School
As a school this week we engaged in many activities and stories focused on Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We ended the week with a moving assembly focusing on the statement that EVERY child matters.
In Kindergarten, students continued working on patterning in Math. They created both AB repeating patterns (ex: blue, green, blue, green) and also some ABC repeating patterns (ex: red, yellow, blue, red, yellow, blue). Students were excited to continue creating their "This is Me" book. They added to their books by creating painting with their favorite color and then adding a shape on top of the color. When they were finished this process they cut out the shape and glued it in their book. In science, they have been exploring the scientific process of sorting. Using a bowl of popcorn kernels, students foraged for treasures Ms. Richardson had hid amongst the kernels. Once students found their treasures they sorted them into groups using various attributes.
In Grade 1 , students learned about orange shirt day and the importance of the statement Every Child Matters. In math students continued their patterning unit, this time with a focus on number. In writing students are continuing to learn about the writing process including the importance of word choice. In science students began to learn about how plants and animals prepare and adapt for the changing seasons.
In Grade 2, students started reviewing no excuse words for their writing and in some cases teachers sent home words for practice at home. They also continued to learn words with an R controlled vowel including words that end in -er. In Math, students continuing with their unit on patterns while in Social Studies students started learning about Calgary in the past which is a part of preparing for their upcoming fieldtrip to Heritage Park.
In Grade 3/4, students continued making walking stories with some of the classes focusing on the seasons. In Math students wrapped up their statistics unit and began to learn about or extend their knowledge of place value. Students were excited to continue honing their soccer skills they learned from Coach Scott in Phys ed. In writing students are learning how to add triple scoop words their writing. First students are engaging in an activity by Literacy researcher Adrienne Gear to determine word choice, then are creating a water color art project based on their new words. In science, students learned about Dangerous Materials as part of the unit on Matter. Students have been tasked to look for the following four hazard symbols at home: poison, flammable, explosive and corrosive. This science lesson tied very well with safety week.
