This Week At the Hamptons School
Our Kindergarten students have had a wonderful week full of curiosity, discovery, and hands-on learning! In science, they began an exciting new unit on ducks by setting up an incubator and starting their duckling journals. They completed their first two pages, including thoughtful predictions about what might happen during the hatching process. In math, the class voted on which egg they thought was most likely to hatch first and used the results to create a graph—egg number 1 was the clear favorite! Students also experienced their first egg candling, where they observed the yolks and developing blood vessels, and watched a fascinating time-lapse video showing how ducklings grow inside the egg. To round out the week, Kindergarten joined the Grade 1s on a nature walk to look for signs of spring and gather inspiration for their upcoming Earth Day assembly.
In Grade One during their UFLI lessons, students focused on the “ng” and “nk” sound patterns, helping to strengthen their decoding and spelling skills. In math, they reviewed 3D objects such as cylinders, cubes, spheres, and cones, deepening their understanding of shapes in the world around them. Science discussions centered on the signs of spring, including changes in plants and animal behavior, as students continued working on their plant logs or Earth Day books. A special highlight was sharing their instructional writing with their Grade 3/4 buddies, proudly showing their progress in communicating clear steps and ideas. The week wrapped up with a joyful nature walk alongside Kindergarten students, where they observed signs of spring firsthand and built connections with younger peers.
Our Grade 2 students have had an exciting and productive week of learning across all subject areas! In UFLI, they explored words with the ee, ea, and ey patterns while completing a fun crossword puzzle using clues to strengthen their decoding skills. In writing, students practiced opinion writing by crafting a clear topic sentence, supporting their ideas with three strong reasons, and wrapping it up with a thoughtful concluding sentence. Science lessons focused on light sources—both natural and artificial—and introduced the fascinating world of bioluminescent animals. In math, students worked on adding and subtracting without regrouping, always starting in the one’s place. Their creativity shined in art as they completed bunny projects using different lines and patterns. Physical education was full of energy as students explored movement through gymnastics and ended the week with a “Mission Impossible” obstacle course. Using technology, students continued progressing through their coding levels and began learning basic typing skills with a computer program.
In Grade Three/Four, students in math, students focused on rounding numbers, building their number sense and strengthening their ability to estimate in real-world situations. To support financial literacy, morning opening tasks included exploring money and real-world shopping scenarios, helping students connect their math skills to everyday experiences. In language arts, students participated in rich literacy centers and dove into different versions of the classic Cinderella story. They compared characters, settings, and variations which sparked thoughtful discussions and deepened their understanding of story elements and theme. Physical education was full of energy and teamwork as students rotated through movement centers and tackled the always-popular “Mission Impossible” obstacle course. It’s been a dynamic week of hands-on learning, creativity, and connection for our Grades 3 and 4 learners!
