This Week At The Hamptons School
This past week, Kindergarten students continued working on their alphabet books, focusing on the letters J and O. They also began preparing for their upcoming Earth Day assembly, learning themed songs and a poem to share during the celebration. Inspired by Todd Parr’s The Earth Book, students explored ways to care for the planet and started recreating their own illustrated pages from the book in art. Their creativity and understanding of Earth Day’s importance shone through their work. In gymnastics, students practiced different types of balances, including three-point and four-point balances. They also experimented with creating their own unique balance poses, building strength and coordination.
This past week, Grade 1s reviewed digraphs in UFLI, focusing on words with “wh” and “ph.” Students also watched a Calgary Public Library presentation on Caretakers of the Land and Sikh Heritage Month. In math, students started learning about 3D shapes, exploring edges, vertices, and faces. In science, Grade 1s investigated the question, "How do animals know when to wake from hibernation?" and began their plant journal, carefully observing how plants grow like scientists do.
In Grade 2 this past week, students worked on r-controlled vowels and completed a crossword puzzle using word clues. In writing, students reflected on their Spring Break using past tense, wrote about facts they learned about the eye and blindness, created thank-you cards for their student teachers, and explored the meaning of April Fools’ Day while practicing how to add details using “For example…”. In math, students learned about Canadian coins and bills, their values, and basic counting skills as part of financial literacy. In science, Grade 2s studied light, the structure and function of the eye, and ways to protect their vision. In gym, students began learning gymnastics, focusing on balances, rolls, and jumps. Finally, they took time to say goodbye and thank you to their student teachers, Mr. Crawford and Ms. Bos, for their support.
In Grade 3/4, students explored money concepts in math, learning how to round amounts and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. In Language Arts, students focused on procedural writing, practicing "How to" instructions to clearly explain a process. In gym, students worked on movement and balance through activities such as Beanbag Rescue, balances like Point and Patch, and a variety of jumps, including star, pencil, and tuck. They also practiced different types of rolls, such as barrel, pencil, and teddy bear. As part of their opening tasks, students completed math mixed operations crosswords and solved riddles related to money and coins. In music, students began learning to play the ukulele, developing foundational skills in rhythm and chord progressions.
